Mountaineers Sweep Walla Walla

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University Softball team swept the Wolves of Walla Walla University on Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers took game one, 9-0, and defeated Walla Walla, 20-0 in game two.
 
Game One
The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers scored early in the first game of the double header. In the bottom of the first inning, Samantha Scott singled through the left side. Cassie Wendt came up to bat and hit a two run home run to left center field, her 27th career home run at EOU, putting EOU ahead, 2-0.
 
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Mountaineers' Marisa Gonzalez led off with a single. After an out, Lindsey Walchli singled through the right side moving Gonzalez up to second base. McKenna Michelsen loaded the bases as she drew a walk. The Mountaineers added their third run of the game as Andrea Roeder drew a bases loaded walk. EOU added one more, on a Wolves error, and after four innings lead, 4-0.
 
Walchli continued to pitch well as she kept Walla Walla off the board. In the fifth inning, Walchli gave up three hits but the Wolves did not cross the plate and after the top of the fifth inning, EOU led 4-0.
 
EOU led off the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back walks and Gracie Flyg followed with a single to right field putting three runners on base. With the bases loaded, Walchli doubled to right center scoring three runs.  After five innings were complete EOU led, 7-0.
 
Walchli continued to keep the Wolves scoreless and in the top of the sixth inning, Walchli induced a ground ball out to start the inning. After giving up a single, Walchi struck out the next Wolves hitter. Another single put two runners on, however, Walchi was able to record her second strike out of the inning. Going to the bottom of the sixth EOU led, 7-0.
 
EOU wasted little time in the bottom of the sixth inning getting more runs across the board. Hess led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a fly out, Wendt hit her second home run of the day, this one to center field scoring two and giving EOU a 9-0 victory by mercy rule. The homerun hit by Wendt gave her the record for most career home runs at EOU.
 
Game Two
In the second game, EOU tied the school records for most runs in a game, 20, and most hits in a game, 21. EOU wasted little time getting their offense going in the second game. EOU scored nine runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first inning.
 
With the Mountaineers ahead, 1-0, Cece Pratt singled up the middle scoring two and extending the Mountaineers lead to 3-0. EOU grew the lead to 4-0 after a Michelsen RBI single. EOU continued to score and after a two run RBI single by Wendt, EOU led 9-0.
 
Walchli set the Wolves down in order in the top of the second inning and EOU made the game 10-0 in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Michelsen.
 
EOU's bats remained hot in the bottom of the third inning. EOU collected seven hits in the frame and scored eight runs. In the inning, Flyg and Pratt both collected two RBIs and Hess, Scott and Wendt collected one RBI. After three innings of play EOU led 18-0.
 
EOU continued to keep the Wolves off the bases as they only allowed one hit in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the forth, the first three Mountaineers singled to load the bases. With two outs, Taylor Smith reached on a Wolves error, scoring one, and putting EOU ahead, 19-0. Flyg recorded an RBI single to center field, tying the school record for most runs in a game with 20.
 
EOU did not score again and held Walla Walla off the board. EOU came away with a 20-0 victory over Walla Walla in the second game of the double header.
 
The Mountaineers host Blue Mountain CC and Big Bend CC this Friday and Saturday for scrimmages. EOU opens up Cascade Conference action next Friday, March 13 when they host Northwest Christian.
