Oregon Tech Sweeps Mountaineers

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team were swept by Oregon Tech on Friday afternoon. The Owls took game one, 5-1, and game two, 7-5, over Eastern Oregon.

Game One (Oregon Tech 5 EOU 1)
In the top of the first inning, the Mountaineers started a two out a rally as Cassie Wendt recorded a hit to put a runner on for EOU. Marisa Gonzalez followed with a walk to put two runners on base. EOU could not get a run across as the next EOU hitter was retired.

Oregon Tech scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. McKenzie Shrum single to get the Owls offense started. She then stole second base and came around to score on a Tara Moates single. After the first inning of play Oregon Tech led 1-0.

The Mountaineers answered right back in the top of the second inning. Gracie Flyg led the inning off with a single to left field. She advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by CeCe Pratt. Flyg scored on a Maryssa Santi single to center field tying the game at 1-1. That would be all the Mountaineers would score in the inning.

The Owls retook the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Sadie Birch led off the inning for Oregon Tech and took the four pitch of the at-bat over the left center field fence for a solo home run putting Oregon Tech ahead, 2-1. The Owls were not done as they added one more run in the inning taking a 3-1 lead after two.

After the second inning, both pitchers settled down and neither team collected another hit until the top of the fifth inning when Haley Hess singled to second base. Eastern Oregon could not get anything strung together and after four and a half innings of play, Oregon Tech led EOU, 3-1.

The game remained 3-1 going to the bottom of the sixth inning. Tasha Silvius drew a six pitch walk to get a runner on base for the Owls. After the next hitter was retired, Ashley Sfetku hit a two run home run to right field, extending the Owls lead to 5-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Kaitlyn Reynolds led off the inning with a single to the shortstop. The next hitter of EOU grounded in a fielders' choice, retiring the runner at second base. The next hitter for EOU struck out and Hess reached second base on a wild pitch. Wendt reached on an error to put two runners on the corners. EOU could not get anyone across the plate and fell 5-1 in the game one.

Game Two (Oregon Tech 7 EOU 5)
The Mountaineers looked as if they were going to jump all over the Owls starter, Rylee Carleton in the first inning. Hess led off the inning with a walk. After the next two Mountaineers were retired, Gonzalez singled to center field. Hess and Gonzalez advanced a base on a wild pitch but they did not score in the inning.

Oregon Tech took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shrum doubled putting a runner in scoring position for the Owls. Moates followed with an RBI double putting the Owls ahead 1-0.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third inning. EOU retired the first two Owls of the inning. With two outs, Shrum came up and hit a solo home run to left field extending the Owls lead to 2-0.

The Mountaineers battled back in the top of the fourth inning as Gonzalez led off the inning with a single. After a wild pitch moved her to second base, Shelby Baertsch hit a two run home run down the left field line tying the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out Katie Virtue drew a walk. Shrum followed with her second home run of the contest putting the Owls back on top 4-2.

The Mountaineers collected only one hit in the top of the sixth inning and in the bottom of the inning the Owls increased their lead. With one out and two runners on, Kayla Prock hit a three run home run to left field extending Oregon Techs lead to 7-2.

The Mountaineers tried to mount a seventh inning comeback. Reynolds started the Mountaineers off by reaching base on a hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout, Samantha Scott reached on an error putting two Mountaineers on base. Wendt drew a five pitch walk to load the bases with one out.

With the bases loaded and one out, Gonzalez grounded into a fielders' choice, which retired Reynolds at home. Baertsch followed with an RBI single putting the Mountaineers down, 7-3. On Baertsch single, Scott came around to score on an Owl error putting the Mountaineers down, 7-4. Flyg followed with an RBI single trimming the Oregon Tech lead to two, 7-5, but that would be as the Mountaineers would get as they were defeated, 7-5, in the second game.
