Cavaliers and Mountaineers Split Twinbill

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team split a doubleheader with No. 16 Concordia University on Friday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field. The Mountaineers took game one, 6-5, on a walk-off home run by Cassie Wendt, before falling in game two, 13-4.

Game One
Concordia scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. With a runner on second base, Taylor Bussey hit a two run home run to right center field putting Concordia ahead, 2-0. Concordia looked to be adding more in the frame, but EOU got out of the inning without giving up another run.

Eastern Oregon answered back in the bottom of the first inning, as Haley Hess drew a walk. Samantha Scott followed with a single to left field. After a fielder's choice, Marisa Gonzalez came to the plate with one out and she hit a three run home run to center field putting EOU ahead, 3-2.

After a scoreless second inning, Concordia answered in the top of the third inning. Kate Santos doubled to center field. Destinee Chang followed with a single up the middle, scoring Santos, and tying the game at 3-3. Concordia was not done, as they had two runners on for Mariah Jimenez, who came up and doubled down the left field line, scoring two, and putting Concordia back on top, 5-3.

EOU trimmed the deficit to one, 5-4, in the bottom of the third inning. With runners on first and second, Gonzalez singled down the left field line scoring one. EOU looked as if they would add more as they had two runners on, but the next three Mountaineers were retired.

After giving up five runs in the first three innings of action, Lindsey Walchli settled down and held the Cavaliers to one hit for the last four innings of play.

Like Walchli, the Cavaliers kept the Mountaineers' bats quiet during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. However, Lucy Baldovino could not keep the Mountaineers' bats quiet in the seventh.  With two outs and a runner on first, Cassie Wendt came up to the plate. Wendt took the fourth pitch she saw in the at bat and drove it over the center field fence for a two run, walk-off home run. This was her ninth home run of the season, which gave EOU the 6-5 victory.

Game Two
Concordia looked as if they would take an early lead in the second game. In the first inning with a runner on second, Bussey singled to left field and Meghan Luebbert tried to score from second base, however, Kaitlyn Reynolds threw her out from left field at the plate.

The Mountaineers came out and took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and two runners on, Shelby Baertsch singled to center field scoring one, putting EOU ahead, 1-0.

Like the first game, the second inning was scoreless and Concordia battled back, tying the game in the top of the third inning. Rylleigh Zbaraschuk reached on an EOU error. She stole second base and advanced to third on a bunt. She came around to score on a Karissa Shiflet RBI single to right field.

The game did not stay tied long as EOU responded in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on second and third, Baertsch collected her second hit of game and collected two RBIS on a single to center field. After three innings, EOU led 3-1.

Concordia responded in the top of the fourth inning as Jimenez hit a two run home run to center field tying the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs and two runners on, Gracie Flyg doubled to left center scoring one and putting EOU ahead 4-3.

EOU and Concordia both pitched a scoreless sixth inning and going to the seventh EOU held a one run lead, 4-3. Luebbert led off the inning for the Cavaliers with a single. After a pop out, Bussey drew a walk putting two runners on base. Santos reached on a fielder's choice, as Bussey was retired at second base. However, the throw by EOU's shortstop sailed over first baseman's head and went over the fence, which let Luebbert score tying the game at 4-4.

Both teams' bats went quiet as the game stayed tied until the top of the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth inning, Concordia's offense came to life. The Cavaliers scored nine runs on nine hits taking a 13-4 lead over the Mountaineers heading to the bottom of the inning.

Eastern Oregon was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth inning and Concordia took game two, 13-4.
