Mountaineers Sweep Walla Walla

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University Softball team swept Walla Walla University on Wednesday afternoon. EOU took game one, 11-0, in five innings before closing out the double-header with a 16-2 win in five innings.
 
GAME ONE
EOU wasted little time taking the lead in the first game. In the top first inning and one out, Samantha Scott singled and Cassie Wendt followed with another single. Both runners advanced a base after a Walla Walla passed ball. After a ground out, Shelby Baertsch doubled to deep right center scoring Scott and Wendt putting EOU ahead, 2-0.
 
The Mountaineers added to their lead in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Wendt doubled to left field, which scored two runs extending the Mountaineers lead to 4-0.
 
Eastern Oregon broke the game wide open in the top of the third inning. EOU scored five runs on three hits while taking advantage of an error by the Wolves. Baertsch and Gracie Flyg recorded back-to-back singles to get the inning going for EOU. They both advanced after a Wolves passed ball. Lindsey Walchli hit a sacrifice fly scoring Baertsch putting EOU ahead, 5-0. EOU continued to added to their lead in the inning as the Mountaineers took advantage of errors and passed balls and added four more runs in the inning taking a 9-0 lead.
 
After the Mountaineers retired the Wolves in order in the bottom of the third, Eastern Oregon scored two more runs in the top of the fourth. With two outs and a runner on first, EOU drew two straight walks to load the bases. Haley Hess stepped to the plate and doubled to center scoring two and increasing the EOU lead to 11-0.
 
The Mountaineers only allowed one more hit to Walla Walla in the final two innings of work. Walchli pitched the first four innings striking out five while only allowing two hits. EOU combined to only allow three hits in the contest.
 
Wendt led the Mountaineers at the plate as she went 4-for-4 while collecting three runs batted in. Baertsch followed with two hits and two RBIs in the contest.
 
GAME TWO
The Mountaineers offense exploded in the second game of the doubleheader, as they recorded 16 runs on 18 hits in the second game. In the second game, EOU hit five home runs, Wendt and Marisa Gonzalez with two home runs each and Baertsch with one.
 
With one out in the top of the first inning, Scott drew a walk. Wendt followed by hitting her first home run of the game and putting EOU ahead, 2-0. Gonzalez followed Wendt's home run with a home run of her own, extending the lead to 3-0.
 
The Wolves trimmed the Mountaineers' lead down 3-1 after scoring one in the bottom of the first inning. EOU responded by scoring three more in the second inning. With one out, EOU drew back-to-back walks. Hess grounded into a force out for the second out of the inning. Scott doubled scoring two runs, putting EOU ahead 5-1. Wendt followed with a single which scored Scott extending the Mountaineers lead back to 6-2.
The score remained 6-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning. Walla Walla added one more run trimming the EOU lead down to 6-2.
 
The Mountaineers' offense exploded in the top of the fifth inning. Gonzalez led off the inning with her second home run of the game. Baertsch followed with a single to center and advanced to second on a passed ball. Flyg singled to put two runners on base. Maryssa Santi doubled, scoring one putting EOU ahead 7-2.
 
With two runners on, Andrea Roeder singled to shortstop scoring another run for EOU. With runners on the corners, Roeder stole second base. Corinna Maestas singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Hess followed with a double scoring two runs and putting EOU ahead, 11-2.
 
Eastern Oregon's offense continued to click in the inning. Wendt came to the plate with two runners on and hit a three run home run, growing the Mountaineers lead to 14-2. Gonzalez followed with a double off the center field wall. She came around to score on a two run home run by Baertsch, putting EOU ahead 16-2.
 
EOU defeated Walla Walla, 16-2 in game two, Hess, Wendt and Gonzalez led the way for the Mountaineers with three hits apiece. Wendt collected six RBIs in the contest.
 
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Feb. 27 when they play Carroll College at 9 a.m. PT in the College of Idaho Invitational.
