McGriff Leads Mountaineers Past Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. – With six seconds remaining in regular time, Bryan McGriff hit a free throw which tied the game at 68-68 and forced overtime, where the Eastern Oregon University Men's Basketball team outscored the Northwest University Eagles, 10-4. EOU came away with a 78-72 victory over Northwest on Friday evening.
 
McGriff led the way for the Mountaineers (13-14, 5-12 CCC) scoring 25 points and collecting 15 rebounds. De'Sean Mattox added 22 points to help the Mountaineers snap a six game losing streak. Case Rada and Deonta Edwards rounded out the double-figure scorers for EOU with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Tomas Ogbaslassie led the Eagles (15-14, 5-12 CCC) with 20 points. Nemanja Grujicic added 19 for the Eagles. Dak Shagren and CJ Carter rounded out the double figure scorers for Northwest with 16 and 10 points respectively.
 
Over the first seven minutes of the contest, Northwest and Eastern Oregon traded buckets and neither team took a lead over four points. With just under 13 minutes to go in the contest, EOU and Northwest were tied at 12-12.
 
The Eagles and Mountaineers kept the game close and with 8:16 left in the half, Christian Parrott gave EOU a three point lead, 21-18. EOU slowly started to extend their lead and grew their lead to eight points, 28-20, with three minutes to go before halftime.
 
Northwest could not get any closer and going into half, the Mountaineers held a six point lead, 30-24.
 
The Eagles slowly began to cut into the Mountaineers' lead early in the second half. With 16:07 left, Shagren put the Eagles down one, 37-36. Shagren continued to battle for the Eagles and put Northwest ahead after an old fashion three point play. With 12:52 left in the second half, Northwest led, 43-42.
 
After taking the lead, Northwest stretched their lead to seven points, 50-43, with 9:51 left in the game. Over the next minute of the half, EOU scored eight straight points taking a one point lead, 51-50, with 8:36 left in the half.
 
After the Mountaineers' run, Northwest answered back and built their lead back to eight points, 63-55. Over the last five and a half minutes of the game, the Mountaineers only allowed the Eagles to score five points and EOU scored 13. The thirteenth point game, with six seconds remaining, came from McGriff hitting a free throw to tie the game at 68-68, forcing overtime.
 
In overtime, the Mountaineers found themselves down a point, 70-69, early. Rada gave the Mountaineers the lead, 72-70, after hitting a 3-pointer. After taking the lead, EOU did not trail again and sealed the game at the free throw line as they went 4-for-4 to end the game.
 
EOU came away with a 78-72 win in overtime.

The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 when they travel to Olympia, Wash. to take on the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.
