Second-Half Drought Dooms EOU Men’s Basketball in Loss to Metro State

CALDWELL, Idaho – Despite another double-double from junior guard Kentrell Washington, the Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with NCAA Division II opponent Metro State (Colo.), as the Mountaineers suffered a 78-59 setback in game one of the Domino's Classic.

Key Performances
For Washington, it was his eighth-straight double-double this season, as he tallied 19 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior forward Kalvin Johanson played big in the middle, registering 15 points and two blocks.

The Storyline
EOU (3-5) scooted to an early 9-4 advantage thanks to two early three's by sophomore forward Brandon Hoston. However, the Navy and Gold went on to miss its next six shots, and the Roadrunners mustered 18 of the next 22 points to take a 22-13 lead with 8:26 left in the opening frame. Johanson and Washington netted four points apiece in the next six minutes to keep EOU close, and the Mountaineers went into the locker room facing a five-point (33-28) deficit.

The Navy and Gold hit just one field goal in the opening six and half minutes of the second stanza, ultimately resulting in a 15-point (49-34) hole. A three-pointer by senior guard Case Rada and jumpers by Johanson and Washington made it an eight-point (54-46) contest with just over eight minutes left, but Metro kept pace thanks to some timely outside shooting.

The Roadrunners (1-2) drilled a trio of three's in less than five minutes to extend their advantage to 19 (70-51) with 2:41 left, and the Mountaineers never recovered.

EOU shot 40 percent from the field and were just 3-for-18 from beyond the arc. Metro gave itself some breathing room in the second half thanks to a 51.9 percent (14-for-27) shooting effort, including five three's.
