KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team held the Oregon Tech Owls to 35 percent shooting and
Nikki Osborne led EOU with 21 points as Eastern Oregon came away with a 76-56 victory on Saturday night.
Osborne, was 5-of-15 shooting from the floor and a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line on the night.
Maloree Moss added 16 points for the Mountaineers (11-4, 3-1 CCC).
Kassy Larson scored 14 points and
Kelsey Hill rounded out the double-figure scorers, for the Mountaineers, with 11 points.
Megan Whetstone and Ashleigh Vandenbrink scored 13 points apiece to lead the Owls (12-4, 1-3 CCC). Karly LeVeque rounded out the double-digit scorers for Oregon Tech with 10.
Over the first five minutes of the game, the Mountaineers jumped out to an early nine point lead, 16-7, after a jumper by
Madeline Laan. EOU continued to hold a nine point lead after a
Jordan Klebaum jumper put EOU ahead, 23-14, with nine minutes and 25 seconds left in the half.
The Mountaineers stretched their lead to 11 points, 25-14, after a pair of free throws by Laan. After taking the 11 point lead, the Owls went on a 17-2 run. EOU's offense struggled during that stretch, as the Mountaineers went seven minutes without a field goal. An Osborne jumper broke the field goal drought for EOU, putting the Mountaineers down 31-27.
Eastern Oregon trimmed the Owls lead down to one, 31-30, after a Hill three pointer. Oregon Tech extended the lead back to four points, 37-33, after a three-pointer by Tress Armstrong giving Oregon Tech a 37-33 lead at halftime.
The Mountaineers' offense remained cold to start the second half of the contest, as an old fashion three-point by Osborne was the only points for Eastern Oregon in the first four minutes of the half. During that stretch the Owls grew their lead to 42-36 over EOU.
The Mountaineers responded and slowly started to mount its comeback and went on a 10-2 run over a five minute span. During the span, a three-pointer by Moss gave EOU a 46-44 lead with 12:33 left in the half. After taking the lead, EOU did not trail for the remainder of the game.
With eight minutes and seven seconds left in the game,
Kassy Larson hit a jumper increasing the Mountaineers lead to ten, 58-48. Larson's field goal was the last field goal for the Mountaineers until Hill hit a jumper with 1:59 to go in the game.
During the Mountaineers' cold stretch, EOU continued hold onto their ten point lead. The Mountaineers went six-for-six from the charity stripe to clinch the, 72-56, victory for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 2 when they host Concordia (Ore.) at 5:30 p.m. at Quinn Coliseum.
