LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team shot 53.4 percent from the floor en route to a 108-71 victory over Walla Walla University on Saturday evening.
De'Sean Mattox scored 30 points to lead the Mountaineers in scoring. He was seven-of-twelve from behind the arc.
Bryan McGriff followed with 28 points.
Early in the first half, the Mountaineers and Wolves stayed locked in a close battle. After
Deonta Edwards three pointer, EOU found themselves ahead by four points, 14-10. The Wolves continued to battle and bounced back to trim EOU's lead to one point.
The Wolves looked as if they were slowly getting the offense clicking as Tyreek Luckett hit a three pointer, putting the Wolves ahead by three points, 26-23. Walla Walla's lead did not last long, as EOU took control of the contest and built an eight point lead, 47-39, going into halftime.
Eastern Oregon continued to extend their lead in the second half, and after a Mattox three pointer, EOU led by 13 points, 52-39. After taking the double figure lead, EOU continued to add to it and never let the Wolves back into the game.
With nine minutes left in the second half, Edwards extended the Mountaineers lead to 24 points, 79-55. EOU continued to grow their lead to as many as 39 points, 108-69, after a Stuart Bartoldus three pointer. Walla Walla scored two more points and EOU came away with a 108-71 victory.
The Mountaineers return to action next Friday, Nov. 7 when they play Walla Walla University in Caldwell, Idaho. This game is part of the Taco Bell Shootout. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.MT.
