LA GRANDE, Ore. – In the NAIA Game of the Week, the No. 4 Carroll College Saints overpowered the No. 15 Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers, as the Mountaineers were defeated 55-7. The Saints outgained the Mountaineers 520 yards to 146 yards, on the afternoon.
Carroll jumped out to a fast start as they forced the Mountaineers into a three and out. Once Carroll's offense got on the field the Saints went 62 yards on eight plays to break onto the scoreboard. Mac Roche found Anthony Clarke for an 18 yard score, putting the Saints on top 6-0.
The Saints extended their lead to 13-0, after Dustin Rinker scored on a two yard run. Carroll went 48 yards on five plays. After the first quarter of action Carroll led EOU, 13-0.
Rinker scored his second touchdown of the game, to start the second quarter. His one yard touchdown run capped off a 79 yard drive to extend Carroll's lead to 20-0.
On the next drive, the Mountaineers answered with a 75 yard drive. On a third and one,
Zach Bartlow went 66 yards for a touchdown and trimmed the Saints lead to 20-7.
After the Mountaineers score, Carroll responded with a 13 play drive, covering 77 yards in five minutes and 19 seconds. Roche capped the drive off with an eight yard touchdown pass to Jared Mayernik. Going into halftime, Carroll led 27-7.
The Saints offense stayed hot in the second half. On their opening possession of the second half, Rinker scored his third touchdown of the game, this one from six yards out, extending their lead to 34-7 over EOU.
The Mountaineers offense continued to struggle in the second half and after a three and out, the Saints were on the move. Rinker scored his fourth touchdown of the game capping off a 15 play drive, covering 54 yards. After the score, the Saints led 41-7.
The Saints continued to grind out yards and points in the fourth quarter as they scored 14 points and grew their lead to 55-7, which ended up being the final score.
EOU returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 18th, when they travel to Dillon, Mont. to face Montana Western. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT.
