Seniors Outshine Lights in Victory

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The No. 25 Eastern Oregon University football team eased past Montana State-Northern for its sixth win of the season Saturday, 41-14.

The Mountaineers (6-3, 6-2 Frontier Conference) won their sixth game of the season for only the 10th time in the program's 82-year history. Eastern led the Lights, 28-0, the largest halftime lead the Mountaineers have had over an opponent under Tim Camp.

Eastern Oregon finished with 463 total yards of offense, behind 297 yards through the air. Chris Ware completed 21 of his 29 pass attempts, with four touchdowns and no interceptions. The senior ran for 84 yards and a touchdown on Senior Day. Kevin Sampson finished with 67 rushing yards, five shy of the EOU career record. The senior did have 107 all-purpose yards in the game.

Jake Burroughs had three receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Abraham Naway caught a pair of passes for two touchdowns and 70 yards. Naway's last four receptions have been touchdowns and have amassed 170 yards.

A Ware to Naway nine-yard reception opened the scoring at the 9:48 mark of the first quarter. The touchdown completed a nine-play, 86-yard drive that took 3:34.

Sampson then broke open a 20-yard touchdown run two minutes into the second quarter. At the 9:22 mark of the quarter, Ware found Naway again, this time for a 61-yard touchdown connection. The Mountaineers final score of the half came at the 1:00 mark of the second quarter, when Ware scampered in on a three-yard run.

A Derek Lear to Orin Johnson four-yard touchdown pass gave the Lights their first points of the game at the 6:40 mark of the third quarter. Two minutes later, Burroughs was on the receiving end of a 16-yard touchdown pass to make the score, 34-7. MSUN's Justi Montelius ran for a 24-yard score with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

The game's final points came on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Ware to Gary Cole. The touchdown was scored with 11:04 left in the game, and it ended a 10-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that took 5:07.

Lear finished 18 of 31, with one touchdown and one interception. The sophomore threw for 189 yards and ran for two. Stephen Silva gained 128 yards on 17 carries. Kyle Johnston led the Lights with 53 receiving yards on four catches. Northern finished with 360 yards of offense.

Eastern finished nine of 14 on third down, while the Lights were one for nine. MSUN finished zero for four on fourth down, and EOU was one for two. The Lights had a slight advantage in time of possession at 30:03 to 29:57.

The Lights' (4-4, 4-4) Landry See had a game-high 15 tackles. Howard McDonald finished with 11 tackles to lead Eastern. The Mountaineers' Mike Goings had a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss.

Eastern travels to Montana Western (2-7, 2-6) next Saturday. The Bulldogs fell at home to No. 3 Carroll College Saturday. The Mountaineers rallied to beat Western, 45-39, earlier this season.
