Mounties Use Offense to Turn Out the Lights

The Eastern Oregon University Football team (3-5, 3-5 FC) capped off a great homecoming weekend with an outstanding all-around performance as they beat the #12 ranked Montana State-Northern Lights (5-2, 5-2) 42-14. The Mounties outscored the Lights 21-7 in the second quarter and never looked back.

The Lights got the scoring started with a 23-yard touchdown pass to lead 7-0. It would be their last lead of the game. Freshman Chris Ware connected with senior Ryan Warner for a five-yard touchdown through the air. Senior C.J. Taylor scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, rushing for two and catching one, Ware's second touchdown pass of the day.

The Lights capped off an offensive second quarter with a late touchdown to leave it 28-14 Mountaineers at the half. The Mounties defense would put the clamps on in the second half, shutting out the Lights while Ware connected with sophomore Justin Udy on a 31-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Senior Gavin Smith closed out the game with a three-yard touchdown run to make 42-14.

Ware had another impressive day, completing 24 of 34 passes for 344 yards and three touchdown passes, while running for 76 yards. He also spread the ball around, finding eleven different Mountaineers. Juniors Terrance Pharr and Jeff McNally each had an interception on defense, as the team earned nine sacks on defense and pressured the Montana State-Northern offensive line all day.

With this win, the Mounties move into a tie for third place with the winner of the University of Montana-Western and Montana Tech game. Eastern next steps on to the field at Community Stadium to face the University of Montana-Western on Saturday, October 25th with the kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PST.
