EOU Men’s Soccer Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Great Falls, 2-1

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Great Falls senior midfielder Luis Torres scored a goal in the 103rd minute, and the Eastern Oregon University men's soccer team fell short to the Argos in double overtime, 2-1, in front of a large crowd at the EOU Soccer Field.

"I am once again proud of how we came out," said head men's soccer coach Stan Rodrigues. "Saddened by the owl goal, but we cannot quit doing what is working only because we made a mistake. We need to continue to grow from these tough lessons. And losing in overtime is tough on body and mind. But we are competing and that's all I ask for."

Key Performances

Junior midfielder Cristian Anguiano scored one goal and fired three shots, while freshman defender Uriel Torres-Carrillo launched two shots on frame for EOU.

Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Alfredo Lara did the best he could in the box, tallying nine saves for the Navy and Gold. On the season, Lara has accumulated 24 saves in just three contests.

The Storyline

Great Falls caught a break in the 29th minute to claim a 1-0 advantage, as a shot by the Argos deflected off Lara and scooted in the goal.

In the 62nd minute, Anguiano notched the equalizer to tie the game at one apiece, as he dribbled past his defender and fired one from 15 yards out in the center of the pitch.

The remainder of the match proved to be a defensive battle until Torres' goal in the second overtime. EOU had chance to win the game in the 101st minute, but a shot by sophomore defender Adonis Chavarin was saved by freshman keeper Marc Girones.

Great Falls (3-3, 2-1 CCC) edged EOU in the shot department, 20-16, while the Mountaineers had eight corners compared to six by the Argos.

Stats of the Game

16 – Shots by the Navy and Gold – a season-high in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play.

2 – Losses in conference play have both been decided by overtime.
