ASHLAND, Ore. – Despite outshooting Southern Oregon, 12-7, the Eastern Oregon University men's soccer team dropped its sixth one-goal heartbreaker of the season on Saturday night, as the Mountaineers fell to the Raiders, 1-0.
"Tonight was a great battle as all our games have been," said head men's soccer coach Stan Rodrigues. "We are not weak, we are young. This game is a good example of how cruel the game can be. We need a bit of luck and in time we will turn it around."
Key Performances
Junior midfielder Jovan Rojas registered three shots, including one on frame, for the Navy and Gold.
Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Alfredo Lara amassed four saves for EOU.
"My team is and will continue to be difficult to beat and soon the wins will come," said Rodrigues. "Kudos to Southern Oregon for being another solid first-year squad."
The Storyline
The first stanza saw a defensive battle between the two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) teams, with EOU outshooting SOU, 7-4, in the period.
The Mountaineers nearly countered off a corner kick in the 33rd minute, but a shot by junior midfielder Robert Wilson was too high.
Towards the end of the first half, freshman forward Evan Brandhagen nearly scored in the 41st minute, but his header was saved by SOU keeper Jonathan Morales.
SOU scored the only goal of the match in the 57th minute after Kirk Basset's shot sailed over Lara from 20 yards out.
After the Mountaineers' next four shots flew wide, Morales tallied another save off one final attempt by freshman midfielder Christopher Gianandrea, and the Raiders (9-4, 4-4 CCC) escaped with a 1-0 win.
