Coffey and Flores Finish in Top Five at Championships

Eastern Oregon finishes in third and fourth place at conference championships

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women's and men's cross country teams had fourth and third place finishes at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships Saturday.

The No. 19 Mountaineer women were led by a second place individual finish by Karlee Coffey. The freshman's time of 18:00 was 20 seconds off the first place pace set by Concordia's Alice Taylor. Taylor broke a course record at Dorris Ranch. The College of Idaho won the team title on the 5k course. The 'Yotes five top runners placed in the top 12, COI's sixth and seventh places finished 14th and 23rd.

EOU's Alma Garcilazo finished in 13th place with a time of 19:02. Sarah Hanchett came in 19th place, Nancy Cardenas and Talissa Baldovino finished in 28th and 34th place respectively.

The No. 6 College of Idaho had 36 team points, Concordia finished second with 94 points. Southern Oregon was third with 95 points, and Eastern Oregon had 96.

The country's top team on the men's side, Southern Oregon, won the conference title with 39 team points. No. 11 The College of Idaho finished 23 points behind with five finishes in the top 20. SOU's David Laney captured the individual title on the men's side with a time of 24:44.

The Mountaineers' third place finish was triggered by a third place overall finish by DJ Flores. The freshman had a time of 25:01, 13 seconds faster than his previous personal best. Forrest Lumpry, Terry Johnsen, Justin Dean, and Ryan Booth rounded out the Mountaineer scoring with 11th, 22nd, 24th, and 26th place finishes. Eastern finished one point ahead of Concordia, which ended up with 87 points.

The Cavalier men and women each have automatic bids in the national championship meet as the host school on Nov. 21. The Southern Oregon men and The College of Idaho women each earned the conference champion automatic berths in the national meet. At-large berths and individual qualifiers will be announced Monday. The national championships will be in Vancouver, Wash., at the Fort Vancouver Historical Site.
