Mountaineer Athletic Legacy Award (Class of 1975)
The Mountaineer Athletic Legacy Award recognizes individuals who have made positive contributions to athletics while attaining outstanding accomplishments and/or achievements in their professions.
After playing football and baseball for EOU, Thunell graduated with a degree in education. He was a teacher, coach and athletic director at Grant Union High School from 1976-2005.
During his 28 years as head baseball coach at GUHS, he amassed a 591-190 record and retired with a state record for career wins. Grant Union won 22 league titles, three state championships and an American Legion championship while he was coach. Thunell was named League Coach of the Year 14 times, State Coach of the Year four times and National High School Baseball Coach of the Year in 2005. He was inducted into the Oregon High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2006.
